CARS…Route 66 Day 2

First stop, Springfield Missouri! Al Roker did a great feature on the Today Show about Route 66 and had a lot footage of Springfield.

We visited the Route 66 Car Museum. It is in an old garage and has cars from 1907 to the 1970’s.

We sat at the counter for lunch at the College Street Cafe. Decor looks like it hasn’t changed in 50 years. A couple of middle aged sweet waitresses, called us honey. I got the special, a Rueben, without thousand island and kraut-OKAY it was a grilled corn beef and Swiss on marbled rye! Vernon-classic burger.

About 40 minutes from our stop for the night we pulled over and went through the Cherokee Nation Anna Mitchell Cultural and Welcome Center. They had a collection of Anna Mitchell’s beautiful pottery. A special exhibit for the Route 66 100th anniversary was on display. It included a feature wall for 66 travelers to sign. Side note-the museum staff engaged Vernon in conversation!

I don’t normally take pictures of a bathroom but check out this sink!

Our hosts for the night were a couple of cattle ranchers. No “Dutton Ranch” drama just a peaceful place to park, rest and recharge.
