Now That’s a Hole! – Route 66 – Day 15

This morning we boarded a Pullman car on the Grand Canyon Railway. Headed to Grand Canyon Village at the southern entrance of the park. As our car attendant Emmet Moffitt said, “This car is vintage, just like passengers from the 1920’s would have ridden.” Emmet entertained us with a steady stream of information, particularly about the trains themselves. Strolling musicians helped pass the time.

Two & a half hours later we arrived at Grand Canyon Village. A few Grand Canyon stats. At the South rim:

Elevation – 6,804 feet above sea level

Width – 10 miles

Depth – 5,000 feet, close to 1 mile

Oldest Rocks – 2 billion years

If you zoom in tight you can see the trail with the burrows on it.

Look real close at “line/trail” going between the two large rocks

Lunch at El Tovar Hotel, opened in 1905. It was considered the most elegant hotel west of the Mississippi. It is still beautiful and the dining room, very elegant.

Lunch on china plates with cloth linens. Our waiter, Guy, was charming and chatty sharing a lot about the Canyon. Drinks a delicious Prickly Pear Margarita and the Joy Bus WOW Wheat. Google the ale the Four Peaks Brewing Company has a great story about the Joy Bus brand.

Traveling back through the Ponderosa Pines, we ran into a spot of trouble…

Color of the bark indicates age of tree

Don’t worry everyone is fine . We gave ‘em a dollar but our “valuables” are safe!

Pulling back into Williams.

Shout out to the Harveys who gave us the idea!! Back snug in Tiny for the night.
