Sure is Hot Out Here – Route 66 – Day 17 & 18

Mission: Get out of the Desert!! Not many pictures and not many stops.

Things we are learning: 1) Tiny Red was not equipped for desert temperatures. The small air conditioner in a cabinet near the floor was no match for 100+ degrees. Solution – temporarily we got a portable air conditioner, which has been amazing. Permanently we will get a roof top air conditioning unit when we get home.

2) A small generator wouldn’t be a bad idea. Some unique camping spots don’t have power.

3) Fun Fact: If you are staying in one location for a few days, you can have Amazon overnight things to the camp store! Came in handy when we needed an airtight connector for the sewer hose.

4) Thirty mph winds cut our gas mileage from 13 to 9 but those same winds are making plenty of electricity for the locals. Wind turbines all the way to the horizon! Look at the tarps on the truck in front of us! Dangerous Winds signs are posted all along the road between Santa Rosa, NM and Amarillo, TX…and we crossed back over the Continental Divide!

We did stop for lunch on the 17th at a family owned bakery and restaurant. Seemed like most of the patrons knew the owners and staff. Reminded me of Jalisco back home. They were all interested in having a table with a view of the soccer match on TV. I had a torta with Milanesa (thin sliced steak), avocado and cheese served on their homemade bread.

5) Extreme Temperatures inside Tiny have taken quite a toll on the refrigerator. Causing the door panel to bow out. Struggling to stay at temp when running on battery while we drive. Duck tape – an essential in any tool box.

But things are looking up as the temperature is going down. We are in northeast Texas – look no more desert!!! Spending the night just outside Shamrock, TX at an RV park that comes complete with a donkey and other assorted animals. Tiny Red, Vernon and I are happy with this spot for the night. Currently 68 degrees 🙂
